Barbara Pastorino

Barbara Pastorino

Born: 1970

Hometown: Milan

Based in: Milan

I was born in Varallo, an artistic town near the Italian Alps, but now live and work in Milan and have travelled extensively. This is also one of the basis for my work.

My art represents the beginning of a trip where I have been or would like to go. I don't know what I will find en route and by how much my painting will be modified along the path.
Perhaps at the end of the road I will have found something new from my subconscious or I will be deeply changed.
When I paint I feel extraordinarily free and with a deeper knowledge of myself. My paintings represent a personal diary with which I can open myself freely. Painting is healing for me.
I feel the physical need to be totally absorbed in the creative process, in the midst of my colours, surrounded by the paintings I love.

I used to paint with oils; now I use acrylics, enamels, pigments; usually on Italian stretched canvases, more rarely, on paper. I use brushes, knives, spray bottles, or I drip the colors. I appreciate also the wonderful technique of engraving.
My source of inspiration are often pictures that I've taken in my trips: natural or architectural landscapes; or images that I create in my fantasy.
I love to experiment creating textures and to see the harmony that springs from shapes and colors.

More About Barbara Pastorino

IconInspires

What inspires you?

My abstract works are inspired by nature and travel. Travel includes physical space as well as inner reality. The centre of my research includes trips into the unconscious, remote or underwater landscapes and literary works, primarily mythological.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

I use several layers of acrylic colours and pigments as well as enamel in my art. The art is often characterized by strong, bold colours. Shapes are like glimpses into a mirage or a dream. I try to express an emotion, mood or feeling. My starting point is an idea, memory or suggestion. My wish is that observers of my work use their imagination to go beyond the boundaries of the painting itself.

IconMagnifying

What are 3 words that best describe your work?

Free, colorful, emotional

IconUser

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?

Pollock, Turner, Monet, Zao Wou-Ki

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Paint your inner world and emotions, no matter if it will be appreciated or not

IconLightbulb

Where do you go for inspiration?

Everywhere in the nature where you can admire natural views, countryside, seaside, mountains, I do scuba diving to admire underwater landscapes; and then ancient or modern towns, to admire what the human kind has created
