Dejan Markovic - Deja Mar (1989. Belgrade, Serbia)

Welcome to my gardens.
With too much pressure to be informed, active, politically, and socially involved there is little to no time for peace and beauty.
Without any serious thought and aspiration, I started creating those gardens for my own pleasure, like a haven, sort of escape to a place where I can meditate and gain strength for the everyday struggle. I was more than moved and grateful to find out that this escapism is welcomed in private collections over the globe.
Usually, I do collages but recently I started going back to painting, always trying to stay true to myself but never the same, exploring color, forms, composition, trying to find the perfect piece of childhood memory, dream, adventure.
If I need to put some artistic labels on my works, I would describe them as minimalistic color-field abstractions with pop art elements.
Parallel to this, I have more than 15 years of writing poetry, and more than 10 years of performance art practice under the name Dejan Klement.

More About Deja Mar

Question IconWhat inspires you?

Contemporary poetry, the exploration of nature, and the fatalism of love.

Question IconDescribe your creative process.

I think I’m obsessed with testing composition, always trying to go a step further, and when the impossible becomes possible and I manage to get balance, I know I’ve done a good job. Yet I think I am a slave to the color that is the basis of all my work. I never work on a template or sketch, I don't have a plan in advance, I always try to listen to the work and see what naturally follows.

Question IconWhat are 3 words that best describe your work?

Colors, shapes, and compositions.

Question IconWho are some artists that have influenced your work?

I don't think there's an era where I'm not in love with at least one artist, but there is no deception when it comes to paintings and collages. Matisse is certainly in the first place, but I love Miró, Calder, Frankenthaler, Rothko... I could go for hours like this.

Question IconWhat is the most important tool when creating your work?

I always carry scissors with me, but I think that intuition is still the most important one.

Question IconWhat is the best piece of advice you have been given?

The artwork should be organically connected.

Question IconWhere do you go for inspiration?

I travel into my memories.
