Gabriel Aries Setiadi
(b. Jakarta, 1984) is an Indonesian
contemporary sculptor who works mainly with stone. His
interest with stone began in 2006 when he sought to
explore the masculine aspect of the materials in relation
to its long historical value within classical sculpture
tradition, which many young contemporary sculptors
have abandoned. Stone is one of the most sturdy and
long-lasting sculpting materials. The versatility of stone
has allowed him to explore and express his aesthetic in
plenty of possible ways: carving, cutting, polishing, and
scraping. In creating his sculptures, Gabriel reflects on
his personal experience, interpreting and assigning
meaning to the reality he lives in as well as its spiritual
aspects. This resulted in minimalistic and serene but yet
rigid looking composition of form and shapes of the
materials he works in.
He studied at Institut Bandung Teknologi both for his
Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. He has exhibited in a
number of exhibitions including “Trienial Seni Patung
Indonesia #3”, Jakarta (2017), “Gudang Garam
Indonesia Art Award”, Jakarta (2015), “Manifesto IV
Keseharian”, Jakarta (2014), and “Bandung New
Emergence Vol.4”, Bandung (2012). Gabriel currently
lives and works in Bandung where he established a
sculpture, art, and design studio Artes Indonesia
