Miki Wanibuchi

Miki Wanibuchi

Born: 1981

Hometown: Osaka

Based in: Osaka

A fine artist who pursues the boundary.

When I walk in a town I have never been to and see the scenery, or experience the activities of people there and the memory of a place, I always get inspired. It is my life’s work to walk in a strange city, and that's all the origin of the creation.

It’s the period like you can feel like you know everything easily just by swiping the touchscreen or surfing the internet. I don't deny that we're in a world of convenience, however, I want to question whether we really see and understand the world (or you) in a true sense. I want to convey we must remember that the truth is in the world that we actually touch, experience and see with our five senses, and that our perception could be diverse.

A realistic painting can be an illusion in the sense of existential. On the contrast, an abstract painting can be said very real, in the materiality of its paints and supports and in the physicality manifested by brush strokes etc. My painting belongs to neither. In other words, it explores the origin of a painting, using a form of landscape painting as a starting point. I choose only one action of it: reproducing the colours in landscape. This does not exclude the possibility of any accidental intervention.

Is it just a depiction, or something that connects people to people, people to society, and the past to the present? Would it be possible that the abstracted vague "paintings" can tell something more than "information" to the viewers by taking time to read and understand it? I believe, as a result, this simple action would reveal the (un-)necessity of a painting viewed by the people living in today’s society. And in the result of communicating that art would be essential to nurture humanity and has the potential to accept others, I believe it will enrich people's hearts and make the world a little more kind.

IconInspires

What inspires you?

When I walk in a town I have never been to and see the scenery, or experience the activities of people there and the memory of a place, I always get inspired. It is my life’s work to walk in a strange city, and that's all the origin of the creation.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

I use the record of photos of what I saw in my actual life. I process the photos into mosaics, extracted colours from them, and faithfully painted dots with it. The information can be easily obtained by showing a photograph, but I think that the abstracted vague "paintings" can tell something more than "information" to the viewers by taking time to read and understand it.

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

A question I had from my tutor "Why do you paint your painting?" made me think about my artwork really professional.
