Nakayama Hitori

Hitori is a sculptor who works with a wide array of materials such as wood, marble, stainless steel and even paper. At the age of twenty, Hitori left Japan to pursue his interest in art. He travelled to the art capitals for the next twenty, learning all the ropes. In 1980, Hitori wrote a book titled “A Visual Point” (published in Kawasaki City, Japan), elucidating his point of view in art. He concerns himself with creating what most people tend to overlook, the beauty of form and space within its vanishing lines. His works encourage the viewers to turn on their extra sensory perception to discover the metaphor which engages these physical monuments beyond the limited horizon of their eyesight. Such experience is highly intellectual, with a therapeutic balance.

His notable public commissions include “A Celebration of Our Blue Sky” (Penang, Malaysia, 2008), “Rolling Stone” (Setia Darma House, Bali, Indonesia, 2012) and “Replacement” (Villa Atas, Bogore, Indonesia, 2012), “Ruseki” (Subang International Airport, Malaysia, 1991), “Natural Carving” (Omron [M] Ltd, Malaysia, 1991) and “Parallel Rainbow” (Saipan Islands, Micronesia, 1989). Hitori also initiated the “Penang Island Sculpture Trail”, a curated public art project which adorns the island city with sculptures created by international artists.

Hitori’s solo exhibitions include “No Fixed Form” (Suma Orientalis, 2019), “The Seven Senses” (Spice Garden, Penang, Malaysia, 2005), “Daybreak of Sophist” (Chiang Mai University Art Museum, Chiang Mai, Thailand, 2002), “Non Technical Works” (Art Gallery USM, Penang, Malaysia,1990) and “Way Toward Image Sculpture” (National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 1989). His group exhibitions include “Our Expression Zero with Montien Boonma” (Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, 1999), “LIFA EARTH” (Ibrahim Hussein Museum, Langkawi, Malaysia, 2000), “Axis Joint Show with Anita Ghei” (Shridharani Gallery, New Delhi, India 1998), “Ryo-Five Japanese Sculptors Abroad” (National Art Gallery, Singapore, 1992), “Bengawan Solo Sekali Sekala” (Balai Seni Maybank, Menara Maybank, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,1992), “Joint Show with Adi Munardi” (Japan Culture Centre, Jakarta, Indonesia,1991), “Calendar Project” (Berkley Office, California, USA,1986), “Tower of Peace Project” (Biennial di Venezia, Venice, Italy, 1985), “Por La Paz (Peace) Exhibition” (Domingo University, Dominican Republic, 1984), “Pusan Youth Biennial Exhibition” (Pusan City Hall Gallery, Pusan, Korea, 1983) and “Mainichi Modern Art Exhibition” (Tokyo Metropolitan Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, 1970).

Hitori currently lives and works in Penang, Malaysia.
