Naomi Vona (Desio 1982), is an Italian artist based in London.
The artist defines herself as an "archival parasite, with no bad intentions".
Her works combines different interests like photography, collages and illustration. Her research is focused on altering vintage and contemporary found images, creating a new interpretation of the original shots.
Using pens, paper, washi tape and stickers she gives to every image a new life.
Every work is basically composed of three elements: her life background, her inspirations and subconscious, that is also the glue that puts all together.
Naomi has a degree in Design and Photography from Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, Italy. Her passion for illustration and photography drove her to experiment with collage since she was a student, developing a personal recognisable style. In 2013 she started to play over vintage photos paintings, doodling and attaching stickers over them. The final result gave her an amazing feeling, so she realises that this was the best way to express herself to the world.
"I like to imagine that I have an imaginary portal that brings me into the past every time I desire, and my artworks are the visual proof of my time travel adventures. The fascination for the past is the key, the flashing colours are the portal."
What inspires you?
For my artwork’s titles, I usually like to quote songs, books, movies and other things that I really love, it’s a personal way to celebrate everything and everyone that inspires me. Every collage that I create is composed of three elements: my life background, my inspirations and subconscious, that is also the glue that puts all together.
Describe your creative process.
My art practice is a mixed balance between photography, illustration and design. What I basically do is to paint abstract forms over found portraits of all sorts. I bring colour to the past, but I also enrich with patterns more contemporary images.
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
I have been influenced by art movements as Surrealism, Dadaism and Pop Art. I also like to get inspired by contemporary artists that work in mixed media field.
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
My head!
