More About Rachel Ostrow

Question IconWhat inspires you?

I am inspired by the mystery, uncertainty and openness of our visual experience and how that can engage our imagination.

Question IconDescribe your creative process.

I paint with a squeegee and unearth images by pushing around layers of transparent paint. This process is physical and playful, like improvisational dance. I add paint with a brush and I throw paint and mediums at the panel. Then, with varied speed, pressure and gesture, I push over those marks with the squeegee. I erase entire paintings frequently and rely on chance for every mark.

Question IconWhat are 3 words that best describe your work?

Outerspace, innerspace and otherworldly

Question IconWho are some artists that have influenced your work?

Zeljka Blaksic, Beka Goedde, Angela Conant, Colette Murphy, Leigh Davis, Juan Pablo Baene, Selena Kimball, Katie Merz, Sarada Rauch, Jac Lahav, Alison Evans, David Lukowski, Carlos Rigau, Sara Jimenez, Marela Zacarias, Georgia Elrod, Gilbert Hsiao, Keiji Shinohara, Kiki Smith, Valerie Hammond, Susan Rothenberg, Max Ernst, Louise Bourgeois, Annie Albers and Eugene Von Bruenchenhein

Question IconWhat is the most important tool when creating your work?

A squeegee, oil paint, and my wall that spins.

Question IconWhat is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Keep working.

Question IconWhere do you go for inspiration?

I don't go anywhere for inspiration. I just work.
