Born: 1980
Hometown: Valencia (Spain)
Based in: Basel (Switzerland)
Sara Sepulveda is a Spanish painter based in Basel and her work features a poetic view of abstraction.
She majored in Architecture in Valencia and Rome and participated in many artistic and interdisciplinary workshops around Europe before becoming a professional artist.
Her artworks focus on the perception through the landscapes of our interior topography and the places where our memories live. Her artworks express a reduction of reality to an emotion using the play of light, the beauty of colors and the sensations of textures.
In her creative process, she uses the overlay of materials, like plaster or paper, and the transparency of layers. She also uses metallic paint and metallic pigments mixed with other colors to make the changing reflections of light part of her compositions. She adapts this process to different techniques, mostly mixed media and collage on canvas or paper.
In her artistic career, she participated in international solo and group exhibitions and her paintings are mostly located in Swiss, German, Spanish and Danish collections.

What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Poetry, harmony and balance.
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
Many artists have influenced my work but mostly Joaquin Sorolla and Fernando Zobel. The first one because the way he paints the colors the light contains and the second one because the minimalisism and the poetry of his abstract paintings and compositions.
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
The most important tools I use are squeegees. They help me to move and give structure to the paint.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
"Paiting is expressing yourself...having fun and playing...painting means not being afraid but feeling freedom" my art teacher told me after studying Architecture and starting to paint again.
Where do you go for inspiration?
My favourite place for inspiration is the sea. I also love water reflections and sunsets.
