Saskia Saunders creates handwoven sculptures for those who seek a natural sanctuary in their lives. Her work explores the tranquillity, wellbeing and freedom felt when spending time in woodlands and forests.
Using plant-based materials such as paper, hemp and linen, she utilises the structural qualities of the yarns to craft minimal, textural pieces.
By bringing the ancient craft of weaving into contemporary form, she is addressing our way of life in the Anthropocene. Saskia’s work shares a vision of striving for a positive future for ourselves and our world, by living more sustainably, in harmony with nature.
Saskia exhibits her work worldwide with galleries such as Amelie in Paris, Contemporary Crafts Centre in Hong Kong and Ruup & Form in London. She studied weaving at the University of Brighton and lives and works in Buckinghamshire, England.
"I work from my peaceful studio, hidden by trees at the end of my garden. Here I keep my looms, yarns and sketchbooks and take video calls with collectors."
What inspires you?
Forests, woodlands and the regenerative power of nature.
Describe your creative process.
Forest bathing is always the beginning. Immersing myself in the feelings and sensations of the forest. From there I photograph, collage and write. Moving onto my sample loom I play with materials and ideas. The final pieces are woven on my Ashford loom or a handmade frame loom and if needed joined together before hanging or framing.
