Tong Wushuang

Based in: Edinburgh

Wushuang Tong is an interdisciplinary artist working across painting and installation. She is also a poet who immerses in silent communication with books and a musician who spends her spare time with the cello. Through years of indulging in literature and music, she perceives the connection among the different humanities disciplines, thus combining writing and music to recreate surroundings that touch her. Born in China and studied in the US and UK allowed Wushuang to place creation in a multi-cultural context. She is now pursuing a master's degree at the Royal College of Art, London. Her paintings are collected by collectors worldwide, including China, the USA, Australia, and Singapore.

Question Icon What inspires you?

I transform everything in my daily life into art. Every joy and suffering have the potential to be inspiration, so I don't feel guilty when I'm not working lol. Usually, nature is more likely to be the direct inspiration for my artwork, coming to lines or patterns. Also, literature plays the spiritual core in most of my pieces.

Question Icon Describe your creative process.

Sometimes I bet my work on my aesthetic instinct and contingency. When I begin to create, I have a general idea of what I'm trying to achieve, and then I let the work change drastically by using mark-making and a mixture of colors, and finally reveal itself. Sometimes I slow down and revise my sketch over and over again. I want to make shapes that are floating, gathering, dissolving, or in any process of moving.
