Bethany Kohrt

Bethany Kohrt

Born: 1977

Hometown: London

Based in: Munich

Bethany is an English artist living and working near to the Bavarian Alps in Germany. Bethany builds up layers using paint and drawing until a rich texture evolves with a beautiful history of addition and subtraction. The piece takes on many forms and has a great many faces until a design emerges and a refining process begins. This reduction of elements is both bold and considered, both radical and cautious. Eventually the composition settles and final adjustments complete the piece. Bethany’s current work is a reflection of the experience of landscape and she spends much time immersed in the natural environment that so inspires her, whether in the Alps or walking in the forests and fields where she lives.

Bethany studied Fine Art at Camberwell College of Art in London and Newcastle University and obtained an Honours Degree in Art History. Bethany works full time in her studio and is now teaching with Nicholas Wilton’s Art2Life team.

More About Bethany Kohrt

IconInspires

What inspires you?

I live near to the German Alps and I spend much of my time in the high mountains, walking, drawing and painting. I am greatly inspired by the mountains of Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland - the rough and raw mountains and extremity of life at high altitude.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

I work in a series so I can transfer my ideas from one canvas to the next quickly and spontaneously. I work in acrylic and oil paint with drawn elements in charcoal, pencil and pastel. I do a lot of experimenting on paper and small canvases to try out new processes and colour combinations.

Turn up and paint every day. No matter what.

IconLightbulb

Where do you go for inspiration?

The Alps near where I live - the landscape never fails to make me want to paint!
