About Chad Schonten

IconInspires

What inspires you?

My work focuses on organic, sculpted patterns. I like my work to be forceful and touchable, by giving it an extra dimension, height. The height creates shadows which emphasizes the pattern. The color of my work is usually white as white doesn't distract from the pattern. Main theme in my work is motion but I like to experiment too.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

I start with the concept: what is it that I want to express in this work? Next step is the design followed by the production of the materials. After that I can start building the composition. This is often an iterative process that takes a long time and oftentimes I have to start all over again. Once that has been completed the work needs to be mounted on the canvas, painted and (sometimes) framed.

IconMagnifying

What are 3 words that best describe your work?

Wall-mouted, 3-dimensional, white

IconUser

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?

Jan Schoonhoven, a Dutch artist best known from the "Zero" movement.

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

My hands

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Do not listen to advice, find you're own way because that is where you will find you're creativity.

IconLightbulb

Where do you go for inspiration?

Museums and (human) nature
