Chengyan Tan

Chengyan Tan

Born: 1985

Hometown: Shanghai

Based in: Shanghai

I am an artist from Shanghai, China.
I studied in the Netherlands for an MFA.
My art research is about the relationship and the link between abstractive language, consciousness, emotion and desires, the balance of control and uncontrollable.

Below is my statement:

"In between reality and the illusion, I find the existence.
what is 'reality' and what is the 'dream'?

Through the paper, I vaguely see them on the other side of the world.
They are another kind of being, they are the other states of the "self"
The image of “I” was detached and dismembered, and changed into other shapes.

Their physical boundaries are blurred and mixed with each other,
Floating back and forth between reality and dreams.
All these images are created by the "self", and the "self" is a temporary format of the collection of everything.

As an interpretation of the state of self-existence and non-existence
I feel the power of the universe and nature. "

"Life" is my biggest influence, all my art creation is a self-practice of my own experience of life. The "self" experienced all kind of things and moments from life, it is being observed and reflected as a piece of creation with curiosity.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

Normally I start by using ink, and watercolour. It is an amazing moment when the pigment met water, it will create a movement that out of my expectation. And after that, I will use colour pencil to emphasize the shapes that I am looking for little by little. It is a progress and the balance of control and uncontrollable, consciousness and emotions.
