Guem MinJeong

Born: 1977

Hometown: Korea

Lives and Works: Seoul

Guem MinJeong has been engaged in site-specific video installations, in which she finds a place that will turn into a work of art, films the site and then installs this video work at the site. Since 2010, Guem has worked on video-sculpture where a real space is turned into sculpture and video images projected in the space are captured in the monitor. She creates a sculptural work with architectural elements such as the wall, floor and door of a space and installs monitors that show videos visualizing psychological experience or emotion about the space as part of the sculpture, creating a whole new space where the sculpture and the video are incorporated.

Guem MinJeong was born in Seoul in 1977. She obtained both B.A. and M.A. degrees in sculpture at Hongik University. She was chosen as Kumho Young Artist(2008) and participated in Goyang Art Studio at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea (MOCA), Nanji Art Studio’s residency program (4th term) at Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) and a residential art program at SFAC Art Space Hongeun. Since her first solo exhibition <House> in 2006, Guem has showcased a series of site-specific video and sculpture installation works – ‘Breathing’ ‘Twisted’ and ‘Melting Object’ series - on the theme of ‘breathing space.’

Guem also held eight solo exhibitions, including 'Breathing Room' (Kwanhoon Gallery, Seoul, Korea) in 2007, 'A Breathing View' (Kumho Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea) in 2009, 'A Breathing LIFE' (Nanji Gallery) in 2010, 'Abstract Breathing'(Culture Station Seoul 284 RTO, Seoul, Korea) in 2013 and 'Separation Walls'(Gallery Sejul, Seoul, Korea) in 2014. She also participated in various group exhibitions, including 'Mind Space-Emotional Media' (ClayArch Gimhae Museum) in 2014, 'Media Art in Korea and Finland_A View from the Other Side' (Moonshin Museum, Sookmyung Women’s University) in 2014, 'Art Peace: How to Heal our Inner Peace with Art' (Kumho Museum of Art) in 2013, 'Birth' (Yangpyung Art Museum) in 2012, 'Chasm in Images' (SeMA) in 2010, 'The Re-composition of Landscape' (Jeju Museum of Art) in 2010, 'Random Access' (Nam June Paik Art Center) in 2010, 'Variety' (MOCA) in 2009, 'Creation Anatomy' (Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art) in 2008. In addition, Guem worked on 'Me Out' (LIG Art Hall) in 2008, in collaboration with choreographer Lee Sun-ah, which was re-played in international performances and choreography festivals in Seoul, Japan and Singapore. SeMA(Korea), Kumho Museum of Art(Korea) and Gwacheon National Science Museum(Korea), Samsonite Korea Co. have her works of art.
