Lives and Works: Indonesia
Hidayat Poernomo, or nicknamed Dayat Repsol is born in Sragen, Central Java, on May 11th 1983. Since childhood, he has been fond of painting and has decided to become an artist. He graduated from the prestigious Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Yogyakarta in 2009 and continues to live and pursue his art career from Yogyakarta.
His photo realist painting technique’s concept derives mainly from popular cultures such as lifestyle and fashion. Although Dayat refers to photographs as references for his paintings but there is no necessity to paint exactly like the original image. He says ”Because painting with a realist style does not necessarily means merely moving pictures or real objects to canvas, but the ability to recreate with our technical ability a character in our artwork / painting.”
Creating artworks is basically an interpretation of life. An artist in essence interprets life's valuation and reality that is ahead of him. On the creative process, which is a learning process, in an artwork there is a meaning that touches with feelings, our way of thinking, attitude and good deeds in both personal and sociocultural reality. On the creative process, Dayat comes into contact with numerous kind of ideas, comprehension along with cultural idioms that surround them. In this context, he is communicating, doing dialog and interpretation in response to the mass culture that thrives today, and become one of the phenomena resulting from swift globalization that surrounds and enters our social life.
