Ja Turla

Ja Turla

Born: 1994

Hometown: Lavezares, Northern Samar, Philippines

Based in: Philippines

Ja Turla came up with Mirrored Trees' concept during her two-week stay in a psychiatric ward in 2015. To keep herself sane, she brought many books and setup a mini library beside her hospital bed. One of the books was Alan Moore's Watchmen. She re-read it and developed an intense fascination with one of the main characters named Rorschach. As his name suggests, it was derived from Rorschach inkblot test (mirrored, black inkblots) used by psychologists to analyze their patients' perceptions. Ja loves taking photos of trees so much so she playfully combined her two interests, hence Mirrored Trees emerged.

She believes this is the only thing she excels at so she tries hard to sustain it. She discovered that the process of creating these images somehow stabilizes her rapid cycling mood and maintains her rational self.

This is also her feeble attempt at exploring the immense array of alternate realms and her way to communicate to the public the certainty that trees are divine and sentient beings.

She already exhibited this photo series around the country and was selected to take part in a group show in Rome, Italy.

This is how she heals.
