Based in: Beijing
Born in Hunan Province, China in 1977, Jiang Pengyi graduated from Beijing Institute of Art and Design in 1999. Jiang's early works, such as in the 'Unregistered City', Luminant' and 'All Back to Dust' series, illuminate rapid urbanisation in modern China and how it undermines Chinese anicent cultural heritage and its rich history. In constrast to these earlier series, 'Everything illuminates' are images of still objects glowing in the dark. These abstract and almost surreal images highlight the artist's change of focus to the natural form of objects.
Jiang has exhibited widely both in China and internationally, namely Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Moscow (2008), Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2009), He Xiangning Art Museum, Shenzhen (2010), New York Photo Festival, New York (2010), Beijing Center for the Arts, Beijing (2010), Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai (2011), Frac des Pays la Loire Fonds Regional d’Art Contemporain, Nante (2011), Ben Brown Fine Arts, London (2011), Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln, Cologne (2012), Galerie Paris-Beijing, Brussels (2012) and Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai (2013).
Jiang’s works are collected by a number of notable public and private institutions, including Guy & Myriam Ullens Foundation Collection in Switzerland, the French Regional Contemporary Art Fund of the Loire Region (Frac des Pays de la Loire) in France, the Tierney Family Foundation and ArtNow Contemporary Art Collections in USA, the UniCredit Art Collections in Italy and Germany, and the Bank Aletti Foundation (Fondazione Banca Aletti) in Italy.
Jiang was awarded the Aletti ArtVerona Prize for Photography in 2011, the Jury Grand Prize from the Société Générale Chinese Art Awards in 2010 and the Tierney Fellowship Award from the First Annual Three Shadows Photography Award in 2009. Jiang was invited to participate in the Helsinki Photography Biennial 2012 and was nominated for the Prix Pictet 2012. He now lives and works in Beijing and Hangzhou.
