Johanna Excell

Johanna Excell

Born: 1985

Hometown: Espoo

Based in: Regensburg, Germany

Johanna Excell is a Finnish biologist and self-taught artist based in Bavaria, Germany. She works mostly with acrylics - creating vibrant, abstract backgrounds in combination with realistic animal subjects. Johanna has a Master’s degree in genetics, but has been working as a full-time artist since 2018.

With her art, Johanna hopes not only to bring happiness to the viewer and remind them of the beauty around us, but to also help raise awareness and directly aid wildlife conservation efforts by donating to various organizations from her proceeds.

Johanna was shortlisted for Wildlife Artist of the Year 2021, and one of her paintings is part of the 2021 invitational collection for Sketch for Survival, a global art initiative in aid of conservation.

More About Johanna Excell

IconInspires

What inspires you?

I'm definitely mostly inspired by colors - often seeing a combination of colors sparks an idea and gets my fingers itching for my paintbrushes. Sometimes I am also inspired by a particular animal, and I then try to paint the most fitting background for it.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

My creative process always begins with the background, intuitively grabbing colors. Usually by the time the background is finished, I have an idea of which species should inhabit it.

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

My most important tool is a high quality precision brush to get all the details into the animals.
