John Manno In The Studio

"My art takes me into a world that at first sight appears to exist, but then reveals itself to deviate from reality."

More About John Manno

IconInspires

What inspires you?

My inspiration comes from many sources: elaborate opera sets, the surrealist painters, photographers who work in the medium of miniatures, and my own intense desire to create alternative realities. These works fill me with a sense of disorienting wonderment: I ask myself where are these places? - what is real? - how do they exist?

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

As I travel around with my camera, I amass a library of photographs of architectural elements and other details which I then print and assemble to physically create a small set. With careful lighting and camera angles, the set is photographed and the resulting image is my art.

IconMagnifying

What are 3 words that best describe your work?

Conceptual. Surreal. Odd.

IconUser

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?

James Casebere, Irving Penn, Man Ray

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

Dedo Lights - they're a set of compact tungsten lamps that let me create the lighting effects.

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Resist the temptation to be concerned with what others will think of your art.
