Lives and Works: Gianyar, Bali
Made Mahendra Mangku graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta in 1997, and has been actively exhibiting his works both domestically and internationally since 1996. For three consecutive years ( 1996 – 1998 ) his works were finalists of the Indonesian Art Awards. Mahendra Mangku now lives and works in Sukawati, Gianyar, Bali.
For him life is like a creative spring that never ceases to give out bounties of fresh imaginations. His works are reflections of a painters attempt to give meanings to the wealth of experiences he gains from life. His experiences of connecting with other people, with the natural and artificial environment and with God – all of which make up the web of realities – have been sources of inspirations that continuously awaken his creative energy to make work of arts.
Mahendra Mangku is living in contemporary world where the power of information globalization process and market economy is dominating all aspects of human lives. A time of daily life grows increasingly banal; a banality that is increasingly accepted as normal. Nowadays, life is a domain crowded by worshippers of capital, hunters of power and worldly pleasures. Under the banner of nihilism and materialism, the reality of contemporary life along with its banalitics is marching forward to displace all those that are spiritual, sublime and mystical.
