“Colour is my day-long obsession, joy and torment.” – Claude Monet
Originally from Delhi, but currently living in the state of Gujarat, Mandira’s artistic journey has been one of exploration, discovery and metamorphosis.
Her art was created with stillness in motion – almost a silent retort to the hustle bustle of everyday life, wherein stillness was the only calm and balance.
On moving from Delhi to Gujarat, the influence on her art shifted too. Colour became more apparent, vivid… adorning her canvas as it did life. Delhi’s melting pot of culture and colour was dimmed by a smaller town’s patriarchal demeanor. Missing Delhi’s funk and freedom of expression, Mandira’s art took a turn for the kitschy, with an interplay of bright, bold colours, broad brush strokes and an unwavering attitude.
Always in the search of a lifestyle unbiased of sex, this was when Mandira’s concept of powerful female energy emerged. She often connects with the symbol of the Lotus for its representation of balance. Her thirst for knowledge keeps her afloat, eager to connect with the world around her.
Mandira has been painting since 2005. Oil on canvas is her overarching medium, often interspersed with a mix of ink and acrylic. This is simply the start of her artistic journey, with much more to be explored, discovered and created.
