Robert Gutierrez (Filipino, b. 1972) paints and draws complex, abstracted landscapes in which he seeks to represent the pleasures and fears of modern culture. The fact that we tend to always feel dislocated is at the forefront of these concerns, lending each piece a quiet desperation. Gutierrez reminds us that all ground is shaky ground; nothing is permanent. Gutierrez has shown nationally and internationally, with group and solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Milan, and Como, Italy. In 2018, he had his first solo exhibition in France at Nathalie Obadia, Paris. His work is represented in the collections of the Berkeley Art Museum in Berkeley, CA; Palazzo Forti in Verona, Italy; Deste Foundation for Contemporary Art in Athens, Greece; and New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, NY. Gutierrez has also been the recipient of several residencies and fellowships in the United States and abroad.
