Lives and Works: Hong Kong
Sarah Lai is one of Hong Kong’s finest still life painters. Born in Hong Kong in 1983, she graduated in Fine Arts, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2007.
The subjects of Lai’s paintings include highly familiar, mundane things such as a desk lamp, a steam rack, or bottle of make-up removal. Isolated from their ordinary context and deprived of indications of their utilitarian function, these relics of our commodity culture take on a surprising aura, reaching a certain degree of abstraction and beauty. Like many Hong Kong artists, Lai derives inspiration from the walks she takes around her home, real experiences, meetings and meticulous observation of her immediate environment.
Lai had several solo show such as Spotting the light onto a light, Gallery EXIT, Hong Kong (2013), Safety Island, Gallery EXIT, Hong Kong (2011), ART HK 10, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Hong Kong (2010). Her works are collected internationally.
