Sarah Myers, born 1980, lives and works in Arizona. As a child her fascination for the artwork in museums - and even for ancient artifacts - formed her feeling that art was the language of a world filled with splendor and possibility. She continues this today with her love of human expressions, depicting heads, hands, movement, vitality in a range of mediums from line drawing and painting to ceramic sculpture. “A vision of a brighter, larger universe can be caught in a face, in a single glance, or a single gesture; it's this I hope to capture and communicate, bringing it a lasting form.”
What inspires you?
I'm inspired by Nature and in particular by human beauty and vitality. I'm also fascinated by artwork from ancient times to modern, where we can see how peoples have viewed themselves and their lives.
Describe your creative process.
When I am painting, sculpting or drawing there's a point where the image seems to take on its own life, where it conveys its message completely by itself. I try to not push it away from that point, but gently coax it into a finished state.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Vitality, expression, humanity
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
Leonardo Da Vinci, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
A pair of eyes
Where do you go for inspiration?
Sometimes to my collection of art books, vintage, much-thumbed treasures; sometimes into the desert beyond my house to stare at mountains. I live in the middle of a very grand landscape.
