Scott Bauer

Scott Bauer

Born: 1972

Hometown: London

Based in: London

When I was very young my family took me to the Ringling Museum of Art in Florida, which has an astonishing collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings. It is the most unlikely art collection you can imagine seeing in the baking sun of the Gulf Coast. I think I must have been incredibly moved by the experience because I became fascinated with art, majoring in art history and fine arts at university. For years I worked in the arts as a specialist at Sotheby’s, a curator for a private collector and a gallery director. It was only a few years ago that I decided what I really wanted to do was make my own art as a career. I had studied painting at university in the United States and continued to dabble in portraiture and landscape painting. My first steps as an artist were in these genres and I have never looked back.
My work has evolved over the last few years from naturalistic, minimalist seascapes to linear abstraction but I always anchor my ideas in the natural world. Music also plays a pivotal role in the creative process for me and I often title my works after specific musical terms, styles and even nods to particular song s I might listen to on repeat when I work. When I started formatting my works in a vertical grid rather than a landscape with a definite horizon line, the rhythms of lines reminded me of sound waves or notes on a piece of sheet music. The breaks and shifts in colour, often incorporating chromatic harmonies that contrast sharply, sometimes create subtle visual vibrations.

Scott Bauer In The Studio

"I always have a vision in my head when I start a new work, but that vision almost never makes its way from my head, via the brush, to the canvas! I might work on a painting for a month or more and there is always an evolution that takes place."

More About Scott Bauer

IconInspires

What inspires you?

Nature and music are the biggest influences on my work. Beyond that, I look at and study a great deal of art from many eras, so influences find their way into my visual vocabulary from across this very broad spectrum.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

Every work I start has been thought out ahead of time. However, as I often say, the vision and the reality are usually very different. For me a work takes time and patience: building up but also removing extraneous parts are equally important until the work feels right; then I can move on to new works with satisfaction.

IconMagnifying

What are 3 words that best describe your work?

Cathartic, musical, luminous...

IconUser

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?

Nature is my first inspiration, but a landscape by Claude Lorraine or Gerhardt Richter can be equally inspiring and can resonate with my own aesthetic vision. Art history, which I also studied at college, has had a major impact on my work, my techniques and my working practices.

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

I just need the tools, good light (not always a given in London!), and good music to get work done.

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

I had a fantastic teacher at art school, the American painter Joan Semmel, who once said to me: 'you are an artist!' This was very affirming.

IconLightbulb

Where do you go for inspiration?

I draw inspiration in all the time. I find visual memories making their way into my work in sometimes surprising and subtle ways. A couple years ago in Biarritz I watched a sunset over the beach that was burned in my memory. There is a specific work that I painted in response to that moment.
