Soichiro Shimizu

Born: 1966

Hometown: Tokyo

Lives and Works: Bangkok

"Soichiro Shimizu's work is unique fusion of action and meditation, nature and artifice, toughness and delicacy.

The artist draws from Japanese, American and European sensibilities to create an original vision that embraces national artistic traditions but also transcends them.

His work is the product of the study and absorption of three different painting traditions. The work resonates with references to European artists like Jean Dubuffet, Americans like Jackson Pollock, along with a complex web of references to the history of Japanese art and crafts.

One senses a deep sensitivity to nature in the work, but t is also undeniabl urban, reflecting the toughness of New York.

The surface of the paintings seems like the surface of the earth, built up with layer upon layer of geological history. There is a sense of naturalness as if the paintings were made through natural processes like eruption and erosion. Yet there is also the presence of a skilled and practiced hard, expert in creating the illusionof naturalness. The colors can seem like those of rock formations and other natural phenomena, but also have a sense of artificiality, the product of chemical reactions brewed in a laboratory.

The tension created by the confrontation of opposite aesthetic forces is what gives the work its power. In his subtle way, Shimizu is an expert at stoking this aesthetic terrain by fusing opposing approaches to painting into a single work. He draws the viewer into his richly layered artistic world.

Experiencing his paintings, one is simultaneously in Paris, New York, and Tokyo, indoors and outdoors, in the past and in the present."

- Jeffrey Deitch

About the artist's "RE-LOOK" series:

Soichiro Shimizu re-looks and offers a second life to abandoned photos at the point of deletion taken by 17 highly accomplished and reputable photographers he knows and admires, all from Thailand: Pahparn Sirima Chaipreechawit, Sam Cochaputsup, Dhanainun Dhanarachwattana, Benya Hegenbarth, Piyata Hemmatat, Tada Hengsapkul, Cattleya Katie Jaruthavee, Lek Kiatsirikajorn, Sirichoke Lertyaso, Tawatchai Pattanaporn, Miti Ruangkritya, Surat Setsaeng, Soopakorn Srisakul, Manit Sriwanichpoom, Phasin Sudjai, Pokchat Worasub, Tunn Chalitaporn Yamoon.

"Soichiro Shimizu's art practice emerged from the modern painting and printmaking traditions, where his education and lived experiences include Tokyo, New York, London and Bangkok, these kaleidoscopic cultural collisions enrich his artistic palette. In this RE-LOOKS series he embarks on a new conceptual challenge and choice of medium. Soichiro invited seventeen highly accomplished Thai photographer friends and colleagues to participate in this one-off project where he asked to utilize their deleted digital photographic files.

Soichiro's recent paintings are labor-intensive processes that involves intricate technique of building up several layers of painted surfaces and then he scrapes it away, so his mark-making becomes a paradoxical act of deletion and revelation.

Seventeen new artworks have been produced with each piece accredited to a photographic participant. Soichiro have turned the bins of photographic images into contemporary printmaking masterpieces by means of re-looking, re-composing and re-incarnating the previously deleted digital files. The fine art prints, powered by Epson's very latest archival inkjet innovations, are then hung in a scroll-like epic painting format. Revealing Soichiro's on-going investigation into the relationship between contemporary painting and printmaking practices."
