Sumie García

Sumie García

Born: 1986

Hometown: Mexico City

Based in: Mexico City

Sumie García Hirata is a cinematographer and mix media artist. She graduated with honors from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010 with a Bachelor in Fine Arts focused on film directing. After moving to New York, she founded the video collective ‘The Manship Society’ and directed music videos. Upon moving back to Mexico, where she was born, she got involved in film production and started participating in group exhibitions of various disciplines including video, installation, GIF and photography.

She is interested in exploring the meeting point between dreams, memory and oblivion; fundamental elements of everyday life that influence our personal stories. She is looking to create mock emotions, collages of contradiction, expressions of fleeting moments and lasting consequences.

Her video work has been recognized in several international film festivals including the HBO Latino Film Festival in New York and contests such as “Hello, Future” of Saatchi & Saatchi. Part of her work is represented by the gallery White Cremnitz and has participated in group exhibitions in Mexico and the United States.
