Hometown: Hill End
Lives and Works: New South Wales
Based within the picturesque village of Hill End in regional NSW Susan Baird’s landscapes convey a moving sense of nostalgia - her vibrant use of colour and swift brushwork generating an immediacy that speaks optimistically of the present. Tying this together is the artist’s poetic rendition of land and sky, amid the faded remnants of what once was.
Baird has been the recipient of various residencies and a finalist in numerous awards, most recently including the Paddington Art Prize (2019, 2018, 2011, 2010, 2009), The Calleen Art Award (2018, 2016), Mosman Art Prize (2015, 2010), Artist in Residence at Bull Bay, Bruny Island (2015), Colville Lloyd Rees Art Prize (2013), Artist in Residence at Murray’s Cottage, Hill End (2012), the Blake Prize (2011). She has also been selected to hang in the Salon Des Refuses, the Blake Prize, the NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize, and in the Paddington Art Prize where she was awarded an honourable mention and won the Peoples Choice Prize.
Her work is held in various collections including J.B.Were and Son, London, Le Meridian, Vanuatu, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Cowra Regional Art Gallery and Artbank, as well as private and corporate collections in Australia, New Zealand and USA.
