Susanne Schwieter

Susanne Schwieter

Born: 1971

Hometown: Basel

Based in: Berlin

Susanne Schwieter was born in 1971 in Basel, Switzerland. She studied and graduated with Meisterschüler in stagedesign and sculpture at the renowned Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1997. As a successful stage designer, she later permanently turned to the visual arts and has participated in numerous solo and group shows in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Denmark and USA.
Schwieter is interested in visual language and seeks in her work the close connection between painting, photography and printing. The interweaving of analog and digital technology is an essential component as well as an expression of the contemporary world. Movement, morphing and dissolving structures are key elements in her abstract works, which are often large-scale and occur in reduced color scale.

Susanne Schwieter In The Studio

"The interplay of digital technology and painting raises questions about structural characteristics and the limits of the physical and virtual world. It thereby reflects my own longing to break down boundaries."

More About Susanne Schwieter

IconInspires

What inspires you?

I'm crazy about contemporary dance. I find William Forsythe or Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, for example, very inspiring. I am captivated by the energy and power of the ephemeral moments of dance. Like dance, painting is an emotional experience that has to do with time and movement.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

I usually start with sketching. For paintings I enter an ongoing process between painting, photography and photoshop. The painted artwork is photographed and finds its way back into the digital realm. I use and reuse elements of my paintings. In this way, my artistic pursuits involve a continuous exploration of pictures of pictures of pictures, with one generation of imagery passed on to the next. These transformation processes also produce unexpected forms, which in turn can become the basis of a sculpture. I harness the beauty of coincidence and incalculable errors, my primary interest is transformation.

IconMagnifying

What are 3 words that best describe your work?

minimal, abstract, hybrid.

IconUser

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?

I am a great admirer of Matisse's sculptural work. How he deals with form, silhouette and contrast has surely influenced me. Klaus Rinke, one of the artist professors from my student days, should certainly also be mentioned in this context. Christopher Wool, Danh Vō or Wade Guyton are artists I hold in high regard and deal with time and again.

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

Spraycan, as an analog and digital tool ;)
