Suzi Morris

Suzi Morris

Born: 1961

Hometown: London

Based in: London

Suzi Morris is a Scottish artist based in London. In 2013 having been awarded a scholarship she went on to complete an MA in Fine Art at the City & Guilds of London Art School followed by a Professional Doctorate in Fine Art at UEL. Morris’ paintings act as tropes of the creative process in their addition and removal of multiple layers of glaze, which leave behind an uncanny culmination of thoughts on the body at a cellular level. An affiliation with Imperial College, London, affords her a deeper understanding of the future of gene editing as genomic medicine enters mainstream healthcare. Seeking to expand the dialogue between science, medicine, and art to initiate change in society’s perceptions of disease, Morris has just been selected to represent the new Institute of Infection, Imperial College, London at The Great Exhibition 2022.

Suzi Morris In The Studio

"The act of painting is magical in the way that it becomes a co-emergent process as paint and body enter into dialogue. Manipulating paint somehow unlocks the gateway to the unconscious allowing meaning and effect to come forth."

More About Suzi Morris

IconInspires

What inspires you?

The act of painting as a bodily experience.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

I don't make definite plans so the works usually begin with colour and gradually multiple layers of oil glaze culminate in the finished work. It's only on reflection after a painting is complete and I am fully present in my studio, can I make sense of the culmination of personal bodily experience, history, theory and new sciences that came together to create it.

IconMagnifying

What are 3 words that best describe your work?

Contemplative, Sensitive and Multi-layered

IconUser

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?

Historically, the Orphists have influenced my work, namely František Kupka and Odilon Redon. Barnet Newman for his use of line and his interest in the Sublime, Mark Rothko for his colour fields, Bill Viola in a spiritual sense and the conceptual art of Cornelia Parker

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

My body and my da Vinci artist brushes. I am an ambassador for da Vinci Artist Brushes.

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

To keep painting no matter what and never compare your work with others.

IconLightbulb

Where do you go for inspiration?

While I visit art exhibitions regularly and I'm inspired by the science that I see at Imperial College London as an artist in residence, ultimately my inspiration comes from within.
