Sylwia Zolkiewska

Sylwia Zolkiewska

Born: 1982

Hometown: Katowice

Based in: Warsaw

Sylwia Żółkiewska is a Polish visual artist, working across various media such as painting, monotype, digital & motion graphics. During her career, she took part in many national and international exhibitions (Slovakia, Switzerland, Spain), and also received an honorary mention and prize during the 2nd Triennale of Polish Contemporary Painting 'Autumn Confrontations' in 2010. Her artworks can be found in private collections in Poland, Norway, and United States.

She draw main inspiration from the digital world, its variability, speed, and design. She explore themes like the passage of time, memories, and self-presence in a virtual context. Her inspirations also lie in haptic, sensual, and not so obvious formations like deteriorated surfaces, temporary city constructions, posters, graffiti, or murals.

In 2007 she received an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (Poland), and for a while studied Media Arts in Finland. Since then she has been developing artistically, experimenting with different media, and also working on multiple innovative nationwide and international cultural and art&tech projects. In 2019 she started working on her interdisciplinary doctoral thesis in the fields of art, new media, and visual culture on Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology.

Sylwia Zolkiewska In The Studio

"My art is about self-exploration, experimenting and traveling less obvious roads."

More About Sylwia Zolkiewska

IconInspires

What inspires you?

Digital world, its variability, speed, and design. I explore themes like the passage of time, memories, and self-presence in a virtual context. My inspirations also lie in haptic, sensual, and not so obvious formations like deteriorated surfaces, temporary city constructions, posters, graffiti, or murals.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

In the beginning, there is always a question or some kind of vision or freeze-frame, which bothers me long enough to start to work with it – make sketches, take notes on the subject, look for further inspirations, etc. While creating I am trying to be open to what may emerge during the creation process. When I consider the artwork finished I leave it for a few weeks or even months to 'mature'. I examine it from time to time to refine and adjust if necessary. Sometimes I start over.

IconMagnifying

What are 3 words that best describe your work?

abstract, minimalistic, expressive

IconUser

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?

In my formal search, a significant role is played by my fascination with abstract art, contemporary sculpture, architecture, new media, interface design, motion design, and typography. I love abstract expressionism and artists like Robert Motherwell, Clifford Stile, Franz Kline. Also, I am very much into Polish abstract art, conceptual and new media art: net art, NFTs, app art, VR/AR, which makes me more courageous in exploring art both in practice and theory.

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

My vivid and abstract, 3d imagination – I create art in my head before I start the actual process.

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Collect inspirations, create many sketches and variations to choose from, always try to see the bigger picture, and create from general to specific.

IconLightbulb

Where do you go for inspiration?

I always strive to look for something new and unexpected, existing on the verge of offline and online worlds. I am very much inspired by the influence the internet and social media have on contemporary art, its form and meaning.
