As a woman from Iran living in America, Talepasand explores how women navigate the geographic and physiological boundaries between East and West. Paying close attention to the cultural taboos identified by distinctly different social groups, particularly those of gender, race and socioeconomic position, her work reflects the cross-pollination, or lack thereof, in our “modern” society. Taravat’s dedicated work ethic involves using new media and technology in her studio practice, which is characterized by labor-intensive and often repetitive processes of painting, drawings, sculptures, and installation to bring a focus on an acceptable beauty and its relationship with art history. The human figure often found in her work is in a treacherous place between narrative and introspection.
