Weng Fen belongs to a generation of Chinese photographers whose principal subject is a China in the throes of physical, social, economic, and political change. His “Sitting on the Wall” series focuses on the elevated urbanism of cities such as Hai-kou, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. Many of these photographs feature schoolgirls with their backs to the camera, perched on a wall or precipice, staring at the landscape-adolescent figures on the threshold of personal transition looking out onto a landscape and a culture at a similarly transformational moment.

Born in 1961 in Hainan, China, Weng Fen graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1984, and lives and works in Hainan since. Weng Fen has been exhibited internationally in major public and private institutions, including the monumental ‘Post-Sense Sensibility’ exhibition in Beijing in 1999, ‘China Avant-garde Artists Documentary Exhibition’ at Fukuoka Museum in 2000, The 1st Chengdu Biennale in 2001, Centre Pompidou, Paris in 2003, Marella Arte Contemporanea, Milan in 2003, Kunstmuseum in 2004, Singapore Art Museum in 2005, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo in 2005, and Haus der Kulture der Welt, Berlin in 2006.
