Yael Salomon

Born: 1973

Hometown: Paris

Based in: Tel-Aviv

Born in France in 1973, I made my first steps in the design world in 1993 with a one year internship at Balenciaga Paris in 1993 in the artistic department after which, I moved to Tel-Aviv, Israel, working in an auction house, immersing myself in the fascinating world of modern and contemporary art. Then curating jewellery from local artists for several galleries, I pursued my studies at the Shenkar Design Academy for a four years journey in the Jewellery Design Department. Following a solo career in fashion jewellery and having my designs sold in prestigious museum stores and boutiques around the world ; it is after some years that I made a turn in my path, discovering clay, and all of its wonders, studying ceramics for four years at the Beniyamini Ceramic Center in Tel-Aviv, leading to a new creative flow, into sculpting, using clay and other materials, developing a new artistic language.
The purpose of alignment, the search for equilibrium between body and mind, emotions and energy ; in a world dictated by stress, taking apart our own ability to connect with our inner self, becoming dependent on our surrounding and the feelings that it creates in us, without considering our mind, our soul, what makes each one of us so unique.
How priming our mind and body, being engaged and focused in the present moment, creates an inner energy that is so powerful it expands to our surrounding, materialises new realities, a new future.
The acknowledgement that we are part of a whole, all made of the very same particles, that this Oneness is the purpose of all ; on the micro, as human beings sharing this amazing ability that we have of surpassing ourselves, our worst fears, our beliefs and misconceptions, seeing clearly new possibilities ; and on the macro, leading for the good of human kind with heart and mind coherence, nurturing our planet, protecting the Earth.
Achieving harmony, by triggering synchronicity in alignment with what Nature does best, and not against it, for the benefit of the self and for the benefit of all ; experiencing wholeness, following what we know, not what we believe.
My practice is a necessity to potentiate these thoughts and translate them into a language that borrows the duality between the man-made imprint, the urbanist surrounding ; and Nature, the minerals, organic forms ; searching for balance through abstraction, inviting the viewer to sense simultaneously the essence of the contrast and its endless potential for poise.

More About Yael Salomon

IconInspires

What inspires you?

What inspires me most are nature (although I live in an urban surrounding), especially reef corals, but also architecture and design history, meditation.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

First the model in created in a big mass of clay, by cutting chunks with wires and knives, giving the overall shape of the piece, then comes the making of the textures, generally using small wooden tools, which is the most time consuming stage of the working process. Once the piece is final, a silicon mould is prepared allowing to later cast in Gypsum with a little polymer giving the material strength, durability and impermeability ; the piece is then air sprayed. Other artworks are one of a kind uniquely made of stoneware or porcelain with or without glaze.
