Youn Myeung-Ro has produced unique abstract paintings throughout his 50-year career, ranging from his informel in the 1960s to works that are reminiscent of action painting in the 1990s. The new pieces this exhibition introduces demonstrate even greater maturity, combined with a touch of moderation, finesse, and the beauty of tempo control. As if taking on the position of a Zen priest, the artist attempts to deliver a sense of perfection, covering every single corner of the canvas. Youn says that “as the years go by, I tend to get up in the middle of the night to make modifications if anything seems amiss. Ultimately, the traces of my spirit and action constitute the origin of my very self; I want to express this. I want to draw the sound of snowflakes falling. I don’t know what it would be, but I want to produce something that would stay unforgotten. From the 1990s on, he used iridescence in his works – the pearl figments in the paint subtly shift in hue in the light, depending on the viewers’ position. The delicate oscillations generate a unique aura that encapsulates the paintings
