Lives and Works: Anhui
Blending traditional Chinese artist elements with contemporary language, Zhang Hao demonstrates a type of abstract, yet familiar style of ink painting and calligraphy. He has dedicated the past three decades in exploring the form and the artistic language of the spirit of ink. Best described in his own words, “When the material quality of ink painting and the expression of language merge at a single point, a unique form of art begins. Exploring the origins of this form is made possible through one’s sense and spiritual world.” His works exude an inherent power of the ink brush, which on each stroke, traces the path of the artist’s body and soul on paper.
Born in Tianjin, Chian in 1962, Zhang Hao graduated from the Department of Chinese Painting at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Art (now China Academy of Fine Art) in 1985. He is currently professor at China Academy of Fine Art and a visiting professor at Anhui University. Zhang Hao has exhibited in major institutions internationally, notably at China National Museum of Fine Arts in Beijing (1995), Shanghai Art Museum (2000), Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2002), Today Art Museum in Beijing, Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer, Germany (2008), Hanart TZ Gallery in Hong Kong (2013).
