Zhang Huan, born in 1965 in Anyang, Henan Province

Moved to New York in 1998, Returned to China in 2005

Zhang Huan is internationally renowned as one of the most influential contemporary artists of today.

Born in 1965 in a small town called Anyang in Henan Province of China prior to the Cultural Revolution, he then followed a classical curriculum in painting. On completing his BA degree in 1988 from Henan University in Kaifeng, he then went to the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing from 1991-1993, during which he established with a group of young Chinese artists what was known as the Beijing East Village. It was in this community that Zhang developed his early performance art practices that would soon bring him global attention.

In the fall of 1998, Zhang relocated to New York City. There, he created works that often responded to his new surroundings and specifically his identity as a Chinese artist within the United States. Since then, his work has evolved into photography and sculpture, while at the same time continuing to execute theoretical mass performances at international museum venues.

He moved back to China in 2005, settling in the southern Min Hang district of Shanghai, where he opened Zhang Huan Studio

Zhang’s work is part of nearly 40 public collections worldwide, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggeneheim Museum, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris
