Ahn Young Il is a Korean-born painter who currently resides in Los Angeles CA. Ahn spent most of his childhood in Tokyo, Japan. He began painting from an early age, debuting his first solo show at age 6. Ahn and his family moved back to Korea in 1945, and there he received critical acclaim at the Korean National Exhibition (1953). In 1966, Ahn moved to Los Angeles, where he was represented by Zachary Gallery. From 1970 to 1980, Ahn was caught in the middle of a dispute between his gallery and one of his most supportive collectors. This ongoing conflict was quite distressing and compelled the artist to seek solace in the ocean and his paintings. For over a decade, Ahn has committed his fervent energy and nuanced understanding of light, color and spirituality to his Water Series, which comprises almost 400 monochrome paintings.
Ahn Young Il’s paintings will be featured in a retrospective exhibition at the Long Beach Museum and the Korean Cultural Center in 2015.
