Starting from the idea of beauty in Wabi-Sabi defined as imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete, I used fallen leaves as an ephemeral subject. Then I added bright colours with spray cans to emphasise the shapes and the three dimensional qualities of the leaves, isolated from their usual context. The colour of the background is blue to recall the sky where in my imagination the leaves are fallen from. Eventually, I photograph them standing as if they were sculptures, showing the beauty of imperfections and their fragility.

Alessandra D’Innella is an Italian photographer living in London. After working in communication in the theatre sector as an art director and graphic designer, she received an MA from Goldsmiths University in Photography. She also has exhibited internationally in several group shows.
Her photographs are created through the usage of colours on natural objects to give a sense of abstraction and surrealism.
Central to her work is the exploration of the creative process, how this is affected by cultural identity, memories and influences from different cultures, and how these factors can affect and transform our perception. More specifically, her practice explores how these notions can be visually translated into a work of art that echoes a place or a visual aesthetic, triggering imagination, desire and escapism. Also whether the interpretation or misinterpretation becomes an act of imagination based on our perception and not on the actual experience of that geographical place and culture.
