Artist Statement

A different style with a different message - the tipping point for this series was the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that would toss out longstanding abortion rights. Paper Dolls remarks on women’s roles and the right to decide what happens to their own bodies and lives are likened to changing the costume the paper doll wears - a role determined by someone other. Purposeful stylizing is reminiscent of the era in which Roe vs. Wade was established as a right, playful comparisons for the viewer to draw what links the images together, a visual protest of my own on what appears to be a forced backtracking of women’s power.

Artist Profile

Born: 1978

Hometown: Chapel Hill

Based in: Chapel Hill, NC

I was born in California, where my earliest memories are creating with crayons and whatever else I could find. I have moved frequently and that certainly has shaped my life outlook. I graduated from High School in Paris, France. I was tired of moving so I decided to go to UNC-Charlotte (graduating with a BFA in Art in 2001), since Durham was the last place I had lived before going overseas. I moved to Chapel Hill after graduation and keep coming back whenever I leave. Chapel Hill is considered home.

After realizing that art is what I was truly meant to do, I picked up again with abstraction and dedicated myself to creating full time. The biggest hurdles I faced were finding places to show art and gaining exposure. I started out with art fairs and exploring social media to further my reach and started building a momentum.

In 2019, I became a member of the Orange County Artists Guild (OCAG). I have participated in many shows within the Guild in addition to independent juried exhibitions, have been published, and I am continuously exploring new avenues to take my work to the next level.
