Artist Statement
Through my art practice, I reflect on the ephemerality and interconnection of our lives. I am inspired too by the Japanese concept of wabi sabi, which embraces an idea of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. It seeks beauty in the imperfections that appear as all things, in a state of constant flux, arise from nothing and devolve back to nothing. Within this unending movement, nature carves out random marks for us to contemplate and it is these arbitrary flaws and imperfections that remind us that nothing lasts forever and that impermanence is the fundamental truth of life.
In this work, I have looked towards the urban environment, particularly concrete, asphalt and stone. These materials connote strength, power and longevity, but even they ultimately erode, and the cracks, marks and imprints left behind speak evocatively of the unstoppable passage of time. Just like natural processes, my work is created by repeatedly adding, and then stripping away, layer upon layer of paint, wax, bitumen, graphite, memories and emotions. And just like natural surfaces, each layer is undeniably altered by the interaction with the next one.

Alpana Vij is a Singapore based contemporary artist. Her practice employs painting, found objects, photography and video to explore themes of perception and what constitutes ‘objective reality’. She is inspired by the Buddhist concept of śūnyatā or emptiness that focuses on the transitory and ephemeral nature and interconnectedness of all phenomena. She seeks to use her ritualized and meditative art making as a reflexive process to question and understand these teachings and to create immersive experiences that poetically engage the viewer in a dialogue.
Alpana graduated with a BFA from College of Art, New Delhi and earned an MAFA from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. She is also deeply involved in bringing art to the community and has initiated and participated in various projects in Singapore and India.
Alpana has shown her works at several solo and group shows. Her works are in private collections in Singapore, United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and India.
