Artist statement
Magnolias are one of the oldest flowers. They predate the emergence of bees, and it is believed that they evolved to be pollinated by beetles. That would be why they have hardened carpels: to prevent their deterioration. It's precisely that combination of toughness and beauty that I find fascinating about this flower.
