Aniwar Mamat (b. 1962 Kashgar, Xinjiang Province, lives and works in Beijing). Beijing-based Aniwar Mamat is China's most famous Uighur contemporary visual artist. Aniwar is a pioneer in developing an abstract painting language, using traditional Uighur color palettes and motifs to create his unique visual language. His paintings, oil on canvas, also incorporate mixed mediums including fabric, gold leaf and photography. Aniwar’s artworks were exhibited/collected in exhibitions curated by the Musée d’art de la ville de Paris; Shanghai Power Station of Art, OCAT Museum Xian, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; SWATCH pavilion at Venice Biennale Arsenale; and others. Pékin Fine Arts represents Aniwar exclusively and we have exhibited Aniwar's paintings around the world in various art fairs, including Dubai, Hong Kong, Paris, Madrid, Milano, New York, Shanghai and Beijing. In short, he is a well-established and active participant in Beijing's contemporary art scene.

Artist Profile

Born: 1962

Hometown: Xinjiang

Based in: Beijing

A singular force in China’s contemporary art scene, Aniwar Mamat creates abstract paintings influenced by his earlier experiments in minimalism and figural representation, as well as by the history of Abstract Expressionism. As a young man in Western China, Aniwar was trained in Uighur carpetmaking, and his works recall felt or woven fabric. But within the abstractions are hints of desert landscapes, wind whipping through cityscapes, and the peaceful quiet of the inner world. To capture these small moments of sensation, he has developed new paints, including a water-soluble pigment that he uses in conjunction with environmental forces such as wind and rain. The result is paintings focused more on poetic and emotional response than the political statements so common in his peers.
