Artist Profile

Born: 1967

Hometown: London

Based in: London, UK

Anne McKenzie was born on a farm near Gweru, Zimbabwe and spent her childhood close to nature. This lead her to pursue a Fine Art degree in the classical tradition of drawing from casts, life drawing and carving in wood and stone.

Anne arrived in London and worked for the Friends of the Royal Academy of Art in the year of the ‘Sacred Art of Tibet’ exhibition, where she discovered a meditative approach to art making while observing Tibetan monks making a sand mandala.

Anne completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Art Therapy at Goldsmith’s, University of London, which enhanced her understanding of the psychological aspects of art making.

Anne has a yoga and meditation practice and an appreciation for Yantras and the Ayuravedic use of colour and form for health and happiness.

Five years of trying to combine light and tree painting eventually resulted in Anne's use of Japanese paper, Shodo and painting from life in Kew Gardens. A trip to Japan to visit Temples and Galleries, make washi and walk a small part of the Kumano Kodo in March 2019 encouraged her to continue to develop this way of painting.

Anne is a member of Design Nation.

Forthcoming shows: The Future of Craft Selects as part of London Craft Week 29 Sept – 5 Oct 2020
Made London 2020 5-8 Nov 2020
