Artist Statement
The quest for contrasting materials and volumes is a recurrent theme in the artistic process of AnneSophie Berbille. The thick black material, striated, plays in opposition with the deep blue - scraped with steel wool - revealing the material of the canvas. Untitled 10 is an invitation to Elsewhere, to a rêverie, a call to the unknown. It is a metaphor of the work of art that exceeds the limits to better reinvent itself.

Artist Profile
Born: 1979
Hometown: Paris
Based in: Paris
AnneSophie Berbille's abstract monolithic paintings explore the role of painting as a spiritual experience starting from the very raw material of painting itself. It is precisely under the sign of exploration that her work wants to place itself through the working of raw material and colour as a material.
Something is happening is the leitmotiv of her work, the driving force of her artistic process dedicated to experimentation rather than to the subject represented. Often at the basis of her creative act, she doesn't hesitate to introduce a distinctive scratching technique, to privilege volume, and to use unconventional tools, often her own hands.
She considers painting first of all as a sculpture because it is as sculpture that painting opens us to a spiritual experience. The black substance especially opens a dialogue between time and space and raises the existential question of us here and now.
AnneSophie Berbille is an abstract artist painter living in Paris influenced by abstract expressionism art movement.
