Medium: Mix of Hard and Thick wood
Size: 90cm in Diameter
Year: 2014

Kumbu Muau is composed from sharp slim lines encased in a circle. While there is a distinctly Sarawakian flavor to the piece, modern elements such as the open-ended composition of the minutely detailed wooden slices juxtaposed against smooth, clean wood pepper with an air of currency. The artist consistently works on ways to incorporate the neat technicality of construction into her creative process; this begins with delightfully fluid drawings. Planning is key to the success of each sculpture and these drawings act as plans from which the two-dimensional pua kumbu patterns can be shaped into their three-dimensional forms. The wooden slices have edges, shapes, sides and depth cut into them, before being fit neatly together to create the smooth, seamless flow of Kumbu Muau.

Artist Profile

Born: 1986

Hometown: Sarawak

Based in: Kuala Lumpur

Hailing from Sarawak Malaysia, young Malaysian contemporary artist Anniketyni Madian is the rare few, if not the only female wood sculptors in Malaysia.

Graduating with a degree in Fine Art (Sculpture) from MARA University of Technology Malaysia, Anniketyni explores within her deeply profound Sarawakian heritage to produce works that are strongly inspired by the sacred patterns of 'Pua Kumbu' textiles that carry with it deep spiritual and conventional cultural elements within the Iban folk. The Pua Kumbu resonates with lifecycle rituals and carries with it gender and hierarchical significance within its community.

Carrying her unique and profound Sarawakian heritage identity, her works continues to excite young contemporary audience today as she cleverly combines heritage and culture into modern aesthetic visuals that resonates with the contemporary viewers of today.

Young Anniketyni Madian has joined the HOM and Rimbun Dahan residency programs and is currently in the midst of embarking on her first international residency program.
