Artist Statement

ARTIST'S NOTES

Inspired by organic cells, fossils, minerals and flowers, I used India ink in combination with elements of the ancient Japanese Suminagashi technique of paper marbling.

The aim was to create visual forms and textures that imitate and amplify nature. Due to the qualities of the materials used, the process of making was very fluid and alive, the resulting elements are partly calculation and partly chance; the outcome of both ceding the artist’s control over the process and being acutely aware of the development of forms and textures. Just like in nature, every element is unique and cannot be repeated.

Cutouts, made alongside the ink elements, both echo and contrast them, serving as an allusion to the fragility of our nature.

The artwork evokes a sense of meditative calm and tranquility.
