'Stormy Sea Outside, Deep Jungle Inside' portrays the dilemma and irony faced by many women when they have finally reached the age of being acknowledged as a full-fledged member of the society and become known as 'adults'. Many women, once they finish their education (up to high school or college in the cities), are expected to settle down and if they haven't found a potential spouse by then, they are encouraged to either find one by themselves or have their marriage arranged by their families for them. Those with supportive families have a second option: to pursue a career so that they could independently support themselves. Neither of these choices are easy. To settle down and be married young (sometimes in desperation) is to let oneself be chained in the woods. Yes, you may find food and water and your spouse would help you build a shelter to rest comfortably. However, your feet are chained. You can't go very far or see much of the world as always there are eyes all over you - checking, demanding. On the other hand, to pursue a career is to sail on the sea and that means facing the stormy weather and all the uncertainties of the unknown. Yes, you are not bound and you are free to go as far as you can. However, your very survival is at stake. Which choice to take is up to the individual woman.

Artist Profile

Born: 1996

Hometown: Bogor

Based in: Yogyakarta

The dream like visuals in Aurora's surrealistic artworks pop with vivid colors. She deftly illustrates visual puns, rebellion and desire to break free from restrains and shackles of a conservative society with cheerful colors. Each work is a story waiting to be told. She draws inspiration from her personal experiences, everyday social issues and symbolisms found in movies, music and literature (classic 20th century to modern 21st century). Aurora often creates works as a thematic series, following though with a specific style, period and narrative.
