Dastar, a traditional, handmade cotton woven fabric, and many families in Yesilüzümlü, Fethiye/Turkey make their living by weaving the fabric on looms and making it into tablecloths, scarves and clothing. Dastar weaving has survived in contrast to popular textile products, kept its originality and continues productivity and the people of Yesilüzümlü are trying to keep the Dastar weaving alive as the inheritance from ancestors.

Artist Profile
Hometown: New York
Based in: New York
Born and raised in Istanbul, Ayse Sirin Budak is a self-taught artist who currently pursues her passion for art at her home studio in New York.
Her interpretation of aesthetic form through the integration of color, architecture, sculpture and landscape includes of no rules nor methods. Her unique technique involves creating directly with her materials rather than first sketching. It is safe to say that all her works are completely intuitional.
What most strikes about her works is the use of ‘color’. She considers color to be an instrument that served a greater purpose, which was to evoke our most basic emotions, and makes sure the color she uses becomes the subject in itself.
She mainly creates in mixed media, mostly acrylic, natural ink and fabric on cotton paper or linen canvas. She emphasizes the concept of 'wabi sabi', the beauty of imperfection which is the reason she is naturally drawn to painting on handmade cotton paper and raw canvas; for their distinctive uniqueness and imperfect textures.
