About the art
Artist statement
“Voyage Suspended” encapsulates Vuong’s mastery in crafting an aesthetic and cathartic narrative. Through meticulously sculpted waves, the artist invites viewers to a sensory experience, where emotion flows and reflections transform with every movement around the work. The material, both generous and luminous, becomes a conduit for contemplation and revelation.
Vuong’s personal history, intertwined with themes of resilience and transformation, resonates deeply within “Voyage Suspended”. The nightscapes within the exhibition evoke existential wanderings, trials, and the courage to confront the shadows that life presents.
“I paint as we see at night, I only use black paint with its variations of shine and mat-ness. I paint between abstraction and figuration, between painting and sculpture, between sky and sea.” — Bao Vuong
Born in late 1970s Vietnam, Bao Vuong’s artistic journey is profoundly rooted in his family’s harrowing sea escape and subsequent resettlement in France. His creative oeuvre, spanning painting, installation, and performance, is an exploration of buried memories and the power of remembrance.
In “Voyage Suspended”, black monochrome paintings serve as a canvas for the contemplation of light within darkness, navigating the interplay between presence and absence, softness and roughness. This body of work invites viewers to confront their own histories while offering a glimmer of hope for a brighter future.
